We had a long day yesterday, but a very enjoyable one. I didn’t expect it to be as much fun as it was.
We left yesterday morning just after 10:00 am with our directions from Sarah. She told us it was a 3 hour drive from our house down to Jay’s farm. Hmmmmppphhh… we forgot to take into account that we don’t drive “sarah-speed”, so I had to phone when we were about 40 miles away, telling them that we were obviously going to be LATE! One thing we noticed the closer we got to the farm, is that it was really hilly!! And there were NO trees except around the farm sites themselves. Very different from just 3 hours away, were I grew up farming. All our farmland was completely flat, except one piece of property which had a couple of hills. We had trees all over too, we used to have to clear trees! So there was a real contrast, even though we’re still in the same province.
When we got there, Jay and his Dad were out working on the machinery, getting it all ready for spring seeding. They didn’t have a speck of snow left, and it was 60 degrees out. It was gorgeous! Of course the down-side to early spring, is that everything is brown, dull and muddy! Everyone came out to greet us, and we made our way inside for some lunch. After lunch was all cleaned up, we hopped in my Jeep and drove into Standard to look at the hall where the reception will be held. It’s a typical country hall, Standard is a typical teeny little small town, and it’s going to be great! The hall is a very good size! I’m not totally convinced that we should set it up the way Brenda suggested, but I’ll leave the final call up to Sarah. From there, we drove over to Rosebud (where the wedding will be) and had a tour of the town.

This is where the wedding party and most of the guests will be staying. It’s gorgeous! The whole town is cozy and quaint, and they’ve done everything they can to maintain as much of it’s originality as possible. It’s like stepping back in time, all nestled down in the hills. In mid-summer when everything is green, it’s going to be gorgeous! We also made the decision to hold the rehearsal dinner at the Inn as well, as they are supposed to be hiring a chef and expanding their services in the next month or so. It will be the perfect place! Next we went over to the church, which also sits atop a hill with a wonderful view of the town below. We wandered through it, figuring things out and checking it out. It’s much prettier than it appeared in the pictures. It will be perfect! Especially for the size wedding we’re having. We took a tour of the rest of the town, and then drove around the countryside looking at different land that they have. We also checked out where Laura and Craig are going to be building after their wedding in August.
We got back to the farm around 4:00, and looked through the original 1918 house that’s on the farm site. Joy and Danny currently live there. It’s in amazing condition, considering the age of it! Our “woman folk” went inside and looked through wedding albums of the other 2 daughters, and Brenda (Jay’s Mom) showed us the dress she’d bought for Laura’s wedding. We visited a while, and then got cleaned up, and headed back over to Rosebud for dinner.

They’ve turned an old Mercantile into the “dinner” part of the dinner theatre. It’s really warm and cozy inside. They have live entertainment during dinner. Last night it was a girl’s trio. There is a school for the Arts there, and kids come from all over Canada to attend. These girls were from that school, so they were very talented. Jay’s Dad, Ray also frequently sings at the Merc during the dinners.

To start, we had our choice of 5-6 salads at the salad bar. Then we went back for the entrees. There was baby roasted potatoes, green beans, stir fried vegetables, rice, salmon with a wonderful sauce, chicken, lasagna, and prime rib. There were other things too I’m sure, but I forget exactly which. Then I topped it off with tiramisu for desert. Brenda and I told them they could have whatever they wanted for the meal, but we INSISTED that they have the tiramisu for one of their 2 desert choices. It was to die for! The main reason we went to the dinner theatre, is that the chef that is catering Sarah and Jay’s wedding is the same man that caters the dinner theatre. So, Ray took hubby over to meet him.

Our next stop was a 1/2 block walk over the theatre. Last night’s performance was “On Golden Pond”. It was delightful!! We laughed until we had tears running down our faces! The play was over around 11:00. We said our “thank yous” and “goodbyes”, and hit the highway. We got home at just after 2:00 am! A LONG, but very good day!
