20 Days and COUNTING

There are only 20 days of school left now! Whoo Hoo! I’m so glad! I just hope we get summer weather soon! This has been a challenging, yet rewarding year for me. Challenging, for obvious reasons. Working with Nick is like working with a ticking time bomb. Even when he’s behaving you can never really relax because you just don’t know how long it’s going to last! Rewarding, because he’s come so far!!! He’s doing things we never thought he’d be able to do this quickly! He wrote the regular grade one math test, and I’ve marked it, but didn’t add up his grade. I gave it to the teacher to finish grading. I suspect he’s in the 70% range. He’s not far behind grade level in reading either! I’ve been doing some testing with him on “everything”, and for a boy who hardly spoke, his receptive language is not bad at all, while his biggest delay is in his expressive language. Ex: if you tell him to touch his elbow, he can, but if you touch your elbow and ask him what you are touching, he likely can’t answer you. He’s gone on swimming trips every month without a problem (last year not allowed to go at all), he’s gone to the rodeo and the carnival for the first time EVER, with wonderful behaviour, and so much fun, and he’s gone to the symphony (oops….. 2 out of 3 ain’t bad!) His behaviour is pretty darn good, about 2/3’s of the time now, and is S L O W L Y learning the rules of good behaviour. All in all, a good year for Nick and I, I’d say!

I’m hoping that after tomorrow, the principal gets a list of the special need kids that will be in our class next year. I also hope she confirms our positions and assignments for next year. Will help me make some decisions as to what I want to do next year!
